Boston in the fall is pure magic, and Alex and Ben’s engagement session brought out everything I love about photographing couples in this city. We met early in the morning, Ben and Alex with their Starbucks holiday cups in hand, ready to explore Boston Common before the crowds rolled in. They showed up in the most beautiful creamy neutral outfits (straight off a Pinterest board!), and from the very first moment, everything just felt cozy, romantic, and effortless.
If you’re dreaming of Boston Common engagement photos with soft, golden light and a peaceful atmosphere, a morning session is the way to go. As a Boston engagement photographer, I got to the park about 10 minutes before Alex and Ben, and I was able to explore a few new spots I hadn’t shot at in Boston Common before because of the quiet morning. We were able to wander the park with plenty of space, not worrying about other people in the background or in spots I wanted to shoot at.
Personal touches add so much depth and storytelling to your gallery, and they looked adorable in photos. I loved that Alex had brought a tote bag with her future last name on it as an engagement gift, and a college blanket from where they met that Ben’s grandma had made
A Beacon Hill Engagement Session Full of Classic Boston Charm
I also love Beacon Hill engagement sessions because once the park started getting a little busier, we made our way to this historic neighborhood for the second half of their engagement session. This neighborhood is one of the top Boston photography locations, and it was absolutely perfect for a Boston fall engagement. The decorated stoops, the brick-lined streets, and the leaves scattered across the sidewalks made every corner look like a movie scene.
In true romcom spirit, we even popped into a local liquor store (literally just opening its doors!) to pick up a bottle of champagne. Alex and Ben popped it on a quiet Beacon Hill street, and the photos were so fun!
We managed to end the session right outside their apartment, a spot that felt incredibly meaningful and tied everything together. I’m already counting down the days until their wedding next fall in New York!

Tips for Planning Your Dreamy Boston Common or Beacon Hill Engagement Session
If you’re planning romantic Boston engagement photos and want a romantic, warm, timeless feel, this area is one of my absolute favorite places to shoot.
Here are my top tips for making the most of it:

1. Choose Sunrise for the Best Light and Fewer Crowds
One of my biggest Boston engagement session tips is to shoot in the early morning, especially if we are shooting on a weekend! Sunrise gives you soft, glowing light and peaceful, almost cinematic moments without distractions. I also recommend shooting on weeknights for a golden hour glow for beautiful photos as well. This session started a little after 9 AM in early November, and it was perfect!
2. Wear Soft, Neutral Tones
Creams, tans, whites, and muted earth tones photograph beautifully against the greenery of Boston Common and the brick architecture of Beacon Hill. If you want more ideas on planning your engagement session outfits, take a glimpse at my blog post here that goes more in-depth!
3. Add Personalized, Sentimental Details
Whether it’s your favorite coffee, a meaningful blanket, flowers, or a bag with your future initials, these little touches make your photos feel more like you and turn your engagement session into a story.
4. Explore Side Streets and Hidden Corners
There are great Boston photography locations all around Beacon Hill, and it's full of charming alleyways, historic brownstones, and cobblestone paths. We will treat the neighborhood like your movie set, every corner offers a different backdrop and set for each scene.
5. Mix Nature and City Vibes
One of the best parts of taking Boston engagement photos here is the blend of nature in Boston Common and the iconic historic city look of Beacon Hill, just a few blocks away. You get an incredible variety without needing to drive or take the T to change locations.
6. Lean Into a RomCom Energy
I tell all of my couples to embrace every moment and really amp up the romance! Walk like you're on a first date, tuck her hair behind her ear, pop a champagne, twirl, laugh, snuggle, and embrace the fun and movement. The more natural you feel, the more natural your photos will look, I promise.
